The agreement was signed by Dr. Yang, Chang-shik, Ph.D. in behalf of Tamna University and Dr. Mariano M. Llerin, Ph.D. in behalf of Liceo de Cagayan University. It was witnessed by Mr. Ko Sook Koo, chairman of I.F. Koresco, who facilitated and hosted the signing at the Hotel Koresco, and his son Ko, Yoong Soon, president of Koresco Corporation.
The signing was also witnessed by university officials of both institutions including Dr. Jung, Koo-chul, Ph.D., director for the Tamna University Institute of Regional Development/Leisure Sports Dept.; Dr. Kim, Eui-keun, Ph.D., director of planning and management and professor of Tourism Management; and Dr. Teresita T. Tumapon, Ph.D., consultant for internationalization and graduate studies dean of Liceo de Cagayan University.
Initially, the exchange will start with 3-4 students from both schools but will increase over time, said Dr.Yang, Chang-shik, Ph.D., university president.
"College education in Korea is rather expensive at something like US$3,000 per semester," Dr. Yang said. "We would like to first see how the program is working and then take off from what proves to be practical, workable and to the mutual advantage of both parties." Besides tuition, he added that the student exchange program would also cover room and board for the scholars.
"In addition, we would also like to extend the opportunity to scholars who excel in the Korean language to teach English during their stay in Korea," Dr. Yang said. For his part, Mr. Ko said outstanding graduates of the program will be accommodated as regular employees in companies of the I.F. Koresco group.
"We are optimistic this will lead to increased cultural and economic exchange between South Korea and the Philippines," said Catalino Chan III, director of the Dept. of Tourism Region 10. "Besides the exchange of students and faculty, we are sure their families will also want to visit the host country. We are honored Tamna University has chosen Cagayan de Oro to be the locus of this exchange."
Liceo De Cagayan University is a non-sectarian university in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines. It currently has 11 colleges and five departments. It is the second largest university in Cagayan de Oro City, after Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan.
"We spent something like P22-million in scholarships alone last school year," said Dr. Llerin. Many of the beneficiaries were student assistants who only had to work four hours a day to enjoy their scholarships, he added. "We will certainly consider poor but deserving students for this program."
Tamna University has existing international exchange programs with organizations such as the Taiyuan College of Science and Engineering in China, nine universities in Japan and the Nobel University in the US. It also has industry-academe linkage programs with special grade hotels and corporations in Korea.
"The school works hard to enable students to have hands-on training in these organizations, and make sure students with good grades can get employed as soon as possible," said Mr. Yang, Chang-shik, Ph.D., university president.
As a result of these programs, Tamna University graduates have a high employment rate despite its relatively young age as a result of such on-site practical training based curriculum designed to produce competent professionals, said Mr. Yang.
Tamna University is located on Jeju Island, which the school describes as "the most beautiful island in South Korea." Jeju is also known as the Island of World Peace and the International Free City.
"With this opportunity, Tamna University is working hard to promote overseas exchange activities with faculty members, invite native professors, and attract overseas students," said Mr. Yang.
Tamna University is located Seoguipo City in Jeju Island, overlooking the Pacific Ocean with Mt. Halla mountain within its campus. It was established in 1997 as a four year private university, with special majors like air service management (the first for a four-year university), employment, hotel management, tourism industry, policy administration and golf system, the leader in the industry.
Other departments open to foreigners include business administration, civil engineering and environmental engineering, beauty design, construction, leisure sports, and cultural studies.
The school has advanced educational infrastructure such as ultra modern buildings, high tech computing information facilities, language laboratories, and over 40 laboratories and training rooms. It also boasts of mock-up facilities for flight training of B737 aircraft, tourism on-site training, casino, and a 170 yard driving range, screen golf system, golf club fitting room, golf history museum and golf swing analysis system for the training of golf professionals.
Tamna University is strategically located near eight prestigious golf courses that require many professionally trained golf employees. To meet the rapidly growing requirements of this leisure industry, Tamna University has established a Department of Golf Systems.
"Jeju now has 25 golf courses," said Mr. Ko. "In a few years, this will increase to 41."
